About the Episode

St Bernardus Abt 12Beer is the modern magical drink – it foams and bubbles and transforms those who consume it. Leave it to science to come in and ruin the magic and mystery here, as its done in so many other areas. This month’s Talking Pints jumps into the lab with one of these fun-hating scientists to investigate the fascinating chemistry behind beer.

Hello, excellent podcast! Excellent selection on the 8wired Hopwired – it’s a pity you’re too far away to fully appreciate the Wetwired (the wet hop version). But…as an Australian, I must say we probably have a bigger craft brewing scene than NZ, but unfortunately not on a per-capita basis. Kiwi crafts have about 10% of their beer market which shows a lot of local support (they also have some really, really cool beers).

Anyhoo, you should chase down some Aussies – for recommendations you can read my blog (http://thewestbender.com) or for a probably more-thorough coverage, craftypint.com is the go to guy.

Thanks for the recommendation, Jack. I’d love to learn more about Australian beer (and sample some, natch). My memory contains hazy recollections of some Moon Dog available here in Canada, but it wouldn’t be the first time it has lead me astray. Every other brewery listed on Crafty Pint, as far as I can tell, hasn’t made it to Canada yet. I suppose I’ll just have to hold out until they do – or orchestrate a beer tourism vacation Down Under!
